Vigo County Jail Roster

The Vigo County Jail Inmate Roster (Indiana) is a public resource that allows anyone to check who is currently held in the county jail. VigoCourt.us helps find publicly available information about current and recently released inmates. Additionally, data can be obtained through the official website of the Vigo County Sheriff, by calling the jail, or visiting it in person. The roster search allows you to find out the status of a person's detention, the charges filed, and bail information. The roster is maintained by the Jail Division of the Vigo County Sheriff's Office; it is hosted online and updated regularly.

Search Current Inmates in Vigo Jail

There are several ways to find information about current inmates in the Vigo County Jail.

Online Search

  1. Go to VigoCourt.us to find publicly available information on court cases and inmates.
  2. Use the Inmate Lookup tool on the Vigo County Sheriff's website. The system allows you to search by last name or booking number.
  3. To check court cases related to the detention, use the Indiana MyCase portal.

To start a search, you will need the person's full legal name. The booking number speeds up the process but is not required. If the roster is displayed as a scrollable list, use the browser's search function (Ctrl+F) to quickly find the desired last name.

Juvenile offenders are not displayed in the public roster.

Find Vigo Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created at the moment a detained person is officially processed into the jail. It is the first document that records a person's custody.

Each such record contains:

  • A unique booking number
  • Date and time of intake
  • List of charges filed
  • Name of the agency that made the arrest (sheriff, Terre Haute police, others)
  • Bail information, if set

Online access to booking records is available through the Inmate Lookup tool on the Vigo County Sheriff's website. It displays data on individuals currently in custody.

If you need a document not available in the online roster — such as an arrest report or a copy of the protocol — submit a request through the public records request form of the Sheriff's Office. Public records requests are governed by the Indiana Access to Public Records Act (Indiana Code § 5-14-3 et seq.), which guarantees citizens the right to obtain government documents.

To check criminal history statewide, use the limited criminal history search from the Indiana State Police. This tool contains information only on felonies and Class A misdemeanors.

Search the Vigo Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The Vigo County Jail roster supports two main search methods.

Search by Last Name

Enter the inmate's last name in the search field. Adding the first name narrows the results, which is useful for common last names. A few practical tips:

  • Use the correct spelling of the legal name — abbreviations and nicknames may yield no results.
  • If the system returns a list instead of a search field, press Ctrl+F (or Cmd+F on Mac) and enter the last name.
  • Try just the last name without the first name if you are unsure of the exact spelling of the first name.

Search by Booking Number

If you know the booking number, enter it directly. This is the fastest way to find a specific record, as the number is a unique identifier.

If the Search Yields No Results

The absence of results does not always mean the person was not detained. Possible reasons:

  • The person has already been released — the roster displays only current inmates.
  • The data has not yet been entered — there may be a delay of several hours between the actual detention and the appearance of the record in the system.
  • The person has been transferred to a state facility — check the Indiana Department of Corrections database.
  • The name was entered incorrectly — try an alternative spelling.

If none of these options help, call the jail directly at 812-462-3226.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Vigo

The Vigo County Jail roster is updated regularly throughout the day, but it is not a real-time system. There is usually a delay between the time of arrest, processing into the jail, and the appearance of the record in the online roster — from several hours to a day.

Key limitations to consider:

LimitationsExplanation
Delay in Record AppearanceRecently booked individuals may not appear for several hours after arrest.
Disappearance of Records After ReleaseAfter an inmate is released or transferred, their record is removed from the current roster.
Not an ArchiveThe roster shows only those currently in custody. Historical data requires a separate request.
Data Entry ErrorsSometimes names are entered incorrectly, complicating the search.

The roster does not replace an official criminal history check. For a complete arrest report in Indiana, contact the Indiana State Police criminal history service.

If you need court documents related to an inmate's case, contact the Vigo County Clerk's Office Court Records Division at (812) 231-4499. Some cases are restricted from public access under Indiana state law.
